Same Day Edit for My Brother’s Wedding

July 25, 2010
Congratulations to my brother and new sister in law, Justin and Stephanie, on their marriage! The ceremony took place on a sunny July 24 at the lovely Brock House at Kits Beach.
When I offered to do the wedding video, I was given a brand new HD camera from my parents months ago for the effort. Then Justin and Stephanie asked if it was possible to do a same day edit for viewing at the dinner party. Now, a same day edit is quite difficult for a team of 2 cameramen and 1 editor, let alone me trying to be both for my own brother’s wedding. But I saw this as a good challenge and I was excited to test my videography skills. There was no way I could achieve this on my own, so I asked my cousin in law, Francisco, to help out and he was able to borrow a Nikon D90 and a slider for free. Together, we assembled quite an impressive line of equipment for the shoot:
Panasonic TM300, Canon HF10, Nikon D90, and 2 mighty GoPro Cameras.
On the day of the wedding, I arrived at Stephanie’s house at 5:00am and began my hectic day. When I wasn’t filming, I was uploading the videos onto my laptop and editing at the same time. Meanwhile, Francisco went to Justin’s apartment in the morning and filmed with the amazing D90 on the slider. I eventually fully dedicated myself to editing after the reception, while Francisco continued to film the photo shoot. I stationed myself in the limo and was feverishly cutting together a nice piece for everyone to view that evening. When my laptop finally ran out of power (there was no power outlets in the limo), I was able to relax for an hour before we arrived at the Executive Inn, where the dinner reception was taking place.
It was 5:00pm, so I had about an hour and a half to finish the edit. I was 90% finished, with only 40 seconds of my clip remaining to fill in. Right on track. But then, disaster struck. Adobe Premiere decided to crash my computer and it continued to crash. I spent the next few hours frustrated trying to fix the bug and missing most of the party inside. Whenever I appeared to have made any kind of progress, it would crash again. We might have overloaded the project file with too many HD video clips, 30 gigs worth. At 9:00pm, I finally gave up feeling gutted about it. I joined the party and drank the night away with everyone else. No one seemed to care too much about it, so I felt better.
Today, I spent half the day trying to fix the problem and was finally able to get it to work. So the same day edit was completed one day later and played for Justin and Stephanie privately. They loved it and I am very happy with how it turned out. Thanks to Fransico for helping out and for borrowing the excellent equipment. The challenge was nearly met, and only because of circumstances beyond my control. So I’d be up for doing another same day edit, as long as it’s not my brother’s wedding. Good thing that won’t happen again. Congratulations Justin and Stephanie.
The video is below and the actually wedding video is still to come. Enjoy!

Just completed three shows and one festival on the 2010 Pearl Jam European tour, and as always, it was a great time with some great people. I went from London to Dublin by van, Dublin to Belfast by train, Belfast to London by plane, and London to Belgium by train.
Here is a video recap of the two weeks of fun, filmed with the wonderful Go target=”_blank”Pro Camera.
Update on The Book

Happy Canada Day! Just an update on The Book. I have now completed two drafts and am currently going through a third edit, so hopefully publishing will begin shortly. I imagine it will finally be available sometime in the fall.
I have decided to go the self publishing route through one of the online print on demand publishers such as Author House, iuniverse, Lulu. Anyone have any experience, opinions or suggestions on this?
Email me if you can advise.
Thanks!

Check out my friend Stefan’s post about our bad luck in Philly, when we tried to attend game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals in support of our favourite team, the Philadelphia Flyers. Stefan had flown from Seattle to be in Philly for the finals, while I flew from Hungary on an impulse decision.

Was in Seattle last week for the 8th annual Flight to Mars benefit concert supporting CCFA Camp Oasis and Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illness. The show was high energy and full of fun as usual, and for the second year in a row I was asked to film and cover the show along with the VIP preparty put on by The Wishlist Foundation.
I gathered a boat load of footage including interviews with fans and the band members. Here’s an interview with Mike McCready about the event as conducted by Donnie for his All That Sacred podcast.
Boat trip on the Norfolk Broads with the GoPro Camera

The GoPro Hero Camera is an amazing helmet camera that captures full 1080p HD videos from a miniature size, versatile, camera that can be attached to anything from your helmet, surfboard, motorbike, or it can just be used plainly as a normal video camera. It’s purpose is to give a great “point of view” shot and different angles than you would normally get on any other device. When I saw sample results of the footage that it produces, I immediately sourced it out on craigslist, and purchased my own GoPro Hero.
On the weekend of Apr 9 – 12, 2010, my good friend from London, Keith, hired a boat for his stag on the Norfolk Broads in eastern UK. So I brought along my little GoPro camera to test out it’s capabilities, purely due to its ease of carrying around. This is the resulting video.

Check out the new music video I did for my good friends Mike and Vicky’s band Ocean Roots. This is an acoustic version of the song “On Our Way”, which is an original from their other band NoRey. The video also features the use of my brand new HD video camera, which will bring you crystal clear videos from now on. Enjoy!
Ocean Roots is a special project that is helping heal the ocean through art. The art consists of a full length cd of original ocean inspired music and sounds of the ocean, as well as paintings from The Underwater Series Art Exhibition done by the very talented Vicky Bowes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to non-profit organizations who specialize in ocean protection and preservation such as Sea Shepherd, Green Peace, Mother Ocean Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage, and Surfrider Foundation.
